i’ve noticed how at work, chinese customers warm up to me so quickly at first. and then they proceed to ask me if i speak chinese. “no, i don’t speak chinese. i’m half filipino, too, so i only understand tagalog.” they smile awkwardly and then silently shrink away from me. once they discover that their fellow china-person is, in fact, an imposter, they cast them out of their circle of trust. and once you’re out, you can never come back.
