after finishing tracy chevalier’s girl with a pearl earring and loving it tremendously, i thought to myself, “you know? that would make a great movie.” so i was pleasantly surprised to discover that a movie (in post-production) will be coming out in december 2003 based on the wonderful novel. and guess who plays the enigmatic johannes vermeer? colin frickin’ firth. i shit you not. has god been listening to my prayers, or is this just one big wacky coincidence?

set to star in the upcoming film as well is scarlett johansson, of ghost world coolness; she’s going to play the young griet who acts as vermeer’s muse, inspiring the famous painting. also, that creepy little girl from the others is going to play cornelia, vermeer’s bratty daughter. i couldn’t have cast the film any better myself.

the only qualm i may have with the movie is colin firth’s long hair. i have a problem with guys whose hair is longer than my own, but i’ll learn to deal. i mean, it’s colin frickin’ firth!

another firth film to keep an eye peeled for in the winter of 2003 is love actually. great cast, including smooth europeans like hugh grant, emma thompson, alan rickman, liam neeson, and keira knightly.
