I have been crazy busy with work these last two months. I’m in court everyday and learning humility very quickly and awkwardly. I’ve conducted trials, sent people to jail, and, at the end of every busy week, gotten drizzunk in Gastown with a bunch of lawyers.
Right now, I’m writing a legal memorandum on how police officers have to knock before they bust into someone’s house to execute a search warrant. It’s amazing how something as simple as a knock plays a huge role in determining the outcome of a trial. Amazing and retarded.
I’ve been working at the Vancouver Provincial Court this summer and it’s been quite the experience. It’s located in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, the poorest postal code in Canada, one of the worst ghettos in North America, with the same HIV infection rate as Botswana (around 30%). Coming from the heart of suburbia, it was a shock to the system. To the people who work at the courthouse, it all just becomes commonplace, seeing people selling crack on the corner and shooting up in parkades. It’s amazing how one can get used to the smell of urine and crackheads yelling and flailing their arms at the bus stop everyday. Amazing and disturbing.
Because of the aforementioned, I’ve been neglecting this website completely. It’s amazing how even when I have real and substantial things to write about, I can’t be bothered to sit down and post anything on here. Amazing and awesome.
